EV2 - My Electric Kawasaki I am happy to announce that after a period of EV inactivity I am finally getting started on my next electric vehicle project. This time around I will be converting a 1980 Kawasaki 400 to battery-electric power. About a year ago I retired the original Saturn EV after a loose connection caused a self-destruct sequence of events. The cost to repair the Saturn was deemed too high (by the Boss of the household), and so that ended my first forray into electric vehicle construction projects. My finances dictated a smaller, less expensive project would be the only way that I could go. This sometimes happens when there a two kids getting ready to go off to University... The start of this new project can be found here. I have sold off all of the electric components from my original Saturn EV and have replaced them with smaller, less-powerful components. My supplier (Randy Holmquist at Canadian Electric Vehicles) was able to set me up with a Briggs and Stratton Etek permanent magnet motor and a Curtis controller.
These motors are rated ~8hp continuous and 32 lb-ft. of torque at 48 volts. They peak at about 15-20hp depending upon the the supplied voltage. These motors are used to power everything from golf carts and boats to heavyweight battle bots. They are very popular for use in electric motorcycles such as the one that I will be putting together over the next few months. |
